KONA FISHING NEWSTaking a break from the cold New York City winter, Brad Phillips and his fiancé decided to visit Kona for a little rest and relaxation in our mild tropical climate. February is a great time to come to the Hawaiian islands, especially for those people living in the north. When you think you've had just about enough of winter, folks come to Kona to golf, hang out at the beach, watch the humpback whales breaching just off-shore, and fish. Kona fishing is good year around. Kailua Kona is on the leeward side of the Big Island, and while the other islands (especially the windward sides) are getting more than their share of rough winter seas, the Kona Coast is provided protection in the lee of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea, the highest mountain peaks in the Pacific. Big pacific blue marlin can be caught any month of the year, while other types of billfish may come and go throughout the year. Luckily for Brad Phillips, the striped marlin have suddenly shown up and are hungry! The Sea Strike hooked a nice stripey and Brad did a great job of angling the fish to the back of the boat. The fish weighed in at 104 lbs., making the angler and the local restaurants very happy! |
